Redundancy and pregnancy or other family friendly rights
There are some new rules around redundancy where the employee is pregnant, on maternity leave, adoption leave, or shared parental leave.
Whilst under the current rules employees in this category must be given priority where suitable alternative employment is available, from April 2024 the protections are being extended to cover employees who have recently returned from a period of leave or who are pregnant, provided they have informed their employer of the pregnancy.
Redundancies always need to be handled carefully to ensure not only that selection is fair and correct processes are being followed, but also to avoid unnecessary stress or distress for those involved. However, now additional care should be taken to include those falling into the extended category.
