Entire books – and many of them – have been written on this subject so here Erika Clifford, Managing Director of Just Recruit is sharing just a few of her personal favourites.
It is of course like so many things; a rather subjective matter and very much an art and not a science. As with the basics of recruitment, you likely know most or all of these but just need a reminder to actually practice them.
Eat a frog every morning
Doing this means starting your day with the toughest, least enjoyable and often largest task. It’s natural to try and get some smaller, easy jobs out the way as you start your day but that just leaves the big, troublesome ones hanging over you and increases the chances it will drift into tomorrow (which often never comes). If you start your day with the hardest task, not only are you getting something important checked off your list, you’ll feel a serious sense of achievement which will provide excellent energy to propel you through the rest of your day – which you can spend on nicer tasks.
If you don’t know, ask.
You don’t need to be an expert in everything, just surround yourself with a network of people that bridge the gaps so you have all bases covered. Be curious and remember that without asking questions, you won’t get answers. It’s amazing how much information kind people will give you for free. Experts love giving advice and it’s a great way to build your network. Just make sure you pay it forward and offer up useful knowledge and experience you have to those in need.
Believe in yourself
Cliché but on-point. If you don’t believe in yourself, how can you expect others to? Never ever underestimate what you are capable of achieving – the only limits that exist are the ones you create in your mind.
Be a person of action, rapid action
Get things done! Have a consistently high output of activity and you will reap consistent benefits and reward. I’m a great believer that you get back what you put in and while in the world of recruitment it’s not always a straight line, the results will always eventually come for all the hard work you put in.
Be clear on ‘the whys’ and remind yourself and customers of them regularly
For yourself – Why do you do what you do? Flexibility / a sizeable bank account / family-related / because you want to create a legacy / [insert your driver here]. Whatever it is that motivates you, don’t ever lose sight of it and use it on the tough days to pick yourself up and keep going and on the good days to really continue momentum and take you from good to fantastic.
For your customers – Why does your business exist in the context of importance for your customers? I started my agency because above all else, I looked at the state of the recruitment industry and knew people deserved better from it. The only way I could really affect change in any way was to break away from the corporate I worked at and start again from scratch because it was simply too broken to try to fix what was already in place. Both candidates and clients understood the benefit to them of our why and so it resonated. Once you can tap into the emotive side of people, you start to win them over.
Over time, your personal drivers will inevitably change so be sure to check in with yourself on these as the years roll by.
Try one, two or all of these tips and see if they make a difference. Practicing them consistently is key so work them into a process to yield the best results.
