From Contingency to Consultancy — Evolving Your Recruitment Business

On Wednesday 6th May, RecConnect brought together a sharp group of recruitment agency leaders at 80 Strand, London, for one of the most commercially focused sessions in the events series to date.

The theme: how to move beyond the transactional, no-win-no-fee model and start building a recruitment business that commands higher fees, deeper client commitment, and more predictable revenue.

The Session

Led by two of the most respected practitioners in the space - Jon Brooks, pricing expert and founder of The Value Advantage and Clair Mohamed, performance partner and L&D specialist for recruitment agencies - the afternoon was anything but passive.

Attendees worked through where they currently sit on the contingency-to-consultancy journey, identified the specific barriers holding them back, and left with a personalised action plan and at least one immediate next step. No theory for theory's sake. Just practical, honest, and at times uncomfortable work that the best recruitment leaders know they need to do.

Conversation in the Room

Thirty sharp-minded recruiters packed into one room, collaborating, challenging each other, and having a genuinely good time doing it. If you weren't there, you'll want to be next time. Key observations:

  • There is an increasing acknowledgement that the recruitment industry is changing, and recruiters need to evolve with the changes
  • Client expectations demand the change. CV-sifters and transactional, contingent-based recruitment, is fading out quickly. Those who do not evolve will struggle and eventually dissolve
  • Understanding the need to evolve is one thing; making the change is something else. It's not just tech or compliance changes - it's a mindset thing. Pay for experts to help shift the barriers preventing the evolution

What Attendees Said

"The collaboration between the recruiters was superb. No ego. Just great vibes and a willingness to share." Rikin Suchak, Director, Source Talent

"I knew I needed to move on from what's always been done. Now I know how. Brilliant session, expertly led." Rob Dermott, Solutions Director, CCA Recruitment Group

The Takeaway

The shift from contingency to consultancy isn't just a commercial decision, it's a mindset one. It is also essential in the evolution of an industry changing as fast as the demands of hiring companies. The recruitment leaders at this event left with the clarity, the tools, and the honest self-assessment to make that shift real.
